Virgin Mary Amolyntos
The Virgin Mary Amolyntos, also called Our Lady of the Passion, depicts Christ gazing at angels holding symbols of His Passion. The 15th-century icon is attributed to Andreas Ritzos.
Lithography in natural wood.
The Virgin Mary Amolyntos (The Immaculate Mother of God)
The name of the Virgin Mary Amolyntos derives from the hymn of the Compline service, “Spotless, Undefiled, Immaculate…”, composed by the monk Paul of the Monastery of Evergetis.
In Orthodox iconography, the Virgin Mary Amolyntos is also known as Panagia tou Pathous (Our Lady of the Passion), because the Christ Child is depicted gazing at two angels positioned on either side of the Virgin Mary. The angels hold the instruments of Christ’s Passion: the Cross, the Spear, and the Sponge.
The original icon is attributed to the 15th-century iconographer Andreas Ritzos, whose works can also be found in Italy and on the island of Patmos.
The icon is exhibited at the Byzantine Museum of Athens.
